Name: Faize Sheifa Beleth
Fandom: Star Ocean 4
Timeline: Right as he leaves the party on Aeos
Age: 18
Appearance: Faize is of the Eldarian race, which means he looks almost exactly like a human, save for some minor physical differences. Interesting features to note include his bright green hair (reaching just to the base of his neck) and the fact that his torso is so slender you could use him to play horseshoes. His eyes are purple, but as a result of genetic engineering, turn completely red when he's upset (more on this later). Although his ears appear to be metallic, it's actually just an ornamental fashion. Thing. He stands at about 5'5, and his weight is unknown-- although we can assume from his stature that he's pretty light.
He wears a standard Eldarian Fleet uniform, which looks like a space rendition of something out of the 19th century. His pants flare out into what look like knickers, but they're actually just poofy shorts over another set of pants, in turn restricted by ornate, knee high battle boots. His vest comes out over his shoulders just a bit, and is decorated by a low cravat. The rest of the uniform is designed as such, with the sleeves bunching up around his forearms, thanks to some wrist guards. The colors are fairly neutral, with the entire uniform being a cream color accented with burgundies, golds, and some sky blue around his neck. Perhaps it's because this is just how a character like Faize is expected to look, but he somehow manages to make this look not dorky. 2D and 3D renditions for reference. 8D
Not shown in those pictures is the black cloak that he eventually dons later on in the game, a memento of a kind member of the Black Tribe of Roak with whom he made a quick, but sincere bond. He wears it like a scarf around his neck and shoulders, from which the two ends trail down his back.
He's also mocked incessantly for it.
Abilities: In the game, Faize is a balanced fighter with both physical attacks and symbology (magic, essentially). When fighting, he uses a rapier that allows him to attack swiftly in quick combos, but also doesn't provide as much physical damage as other characters' weapons. Plus, they don't always hit. On the other hand, like I mentioned before he's also proficient in symbology, mostly in the elements of Earth, Water/Ice andHeart Darkness. His other abilities include his technical prowess, especially when it comes to engineering and alchemy. He's able to build his own personal space craft known as the Sol and also geeks out over/analyzes other technologies encountered throughout the game.
Personality: Although he gives off the impression as someone who's serious and unapproachable at first, Faize is actually more of the opposite. He's polite almost to a fault, even when within familiar company, keeping a formal air with his words. However, even though he's the type to keep the peace, he's also not afraid of confrontation nor standing up for himself and his friends when necessary. At the same time, he'll also do everything in his power to quell a matter before it reaches those extremes, preferring to take the mature approach and walking away if needed.
Because he tends to be so honest with his positive feelings, it's fairly easy to read Faize at times. When he meets Edge and Reimi for the first time, even after saving their lives, he remains humble and in awe at their abilities. If his own remarkable traits are brought up, he immediately deflects it to the other individual's strengths. It isn't a matter of not liking to talk about himself, after all, he'll explain things about his culture and lifestyle if asked, it's a matter of how humble he truly is. He is in a constant state of improving himself, and one of his main goals upon meeting Edge is to be able to continue moving forward like he does.
In truth, being part of an emotionally repressed society (again, more on this later), has led him able to deal with a good-sized amount of stress without showing it... although once he hits his breaking point, he'll become skittish and overwhelmed. But again, he keeps a strong face because that is what's acceptable, and expected of him in hard times. This doesn't mean that he doesn't have his own weaknesses-- throughout the game, Faize is often pummeled with situations beyond his own control, especially when it comes to many of his brethren and friends dying. After living a life where the unexpected was unheard of, and being in charge of many of his own ideals, coming face to face with his own powerlessness in the Grand Scheme of Things really takes a psychological toll on him. He eventually transforms from a hopeful youth, to a slightly more cynical person. The light is still there, it's just been misguided.
History: SUPER CONDENSED VERSION TO SAVE THE COMMENT SPAM
In game, Edge and Reimi first meet Faize during a mission on Aeos, where, after their first mission, two of the three SRF [Space Reconnaisance Force, an exploration fleet from Earth] ships have disappeared entirely. After Edge and Reimi find the remains of first ship, the SRF-005 Eremia, (...along with a dead soldier and a fragment of what they believe to be a meteorite, they are caught off guard by and attacked by a monster. That would have been the end of the storyline right then and there, had Faize not shown up in the nick of time to save both their hides, sent by the Earthling commanding officer Captain Grafton. When they go to thank them, however, Faize informs them that OH SHIT HE'S AN ALIEN, despite the fact that he doesn't look too different than they do.
He quickly explains that the relationship between Earthlings and Eldarians has been quite friendly for an extended period of time, but kept secret to avoid causing some sort of uproar. He then brings them to a combination Earthling/Eldarian exploration base, erected swiftly during their short excursion on Aeos. The Eldarian forces had received the SOS from the Eartlhing SRF fleet, and since they were in the neighborhood, stopped by to help search for and recover the fallen spacecraft.
Although he doesn't go into these details on the beach, the extended version is as follows: Both species are in a similar predicament, what with their planets slowly dying. In the case of Earthlings, we've gone and royally fucked up, blowing the Earth's land to high heaven so that the only way for us to survive was in fact taking to the stars. In the case of the Eldarians, Eldar is the fifth planet of the Eldar system (THEY'RE SO CREATIVE orz), and is pretty much on its last legs. Their sun, once like ours, has actually grown into the size of a red giant, rendering life on Eldar almost impossible. The planet itself only has centuries to live, and the inhabitants themselves mere decades before they gotta skedaddle or burn.
In order to cope with this, the Eldarians turned to ~*science*~. That is, advanced technology combined with incredible amounts of genetic modification leading to suppressed emotions to help cope with the fact that Oh-Dear-Sweet-Eldarian-Jesus-We-Are-All-Going-To-Die. Faize himself mentions in passing that he actually doesn't have a family to speak of-- he was created in a lab from genes that Eldarian society has found to be superior, hence his physically well balanced nature. Like Earthlings after them, they began to search for a new planet to inhabit, eventually coming across Earthlings in the process. Sympathizing with their situation, the Eldarians shared their technology to bring Earthlings up to speed, and the two races agreed to work together towards a shared goal.
But that's enough backstory-- back to the game.
After the trio arrived at the new exploration base, Edge is made caption of the SRF-003 Calnus, Reimi his First Mate, and Faize receives orders from the overall-head-honcho of Eldar himself, Gaghan, to accompany Edge and Reimi on their journey as a representation of the Eldarian fleet, along with holding the position of their navigator. They are given the mission to search for other inhabitable planets, along with keeping an eye out for Edge's friend Crowe, who was captain of the SRF-001 Aquila one of the other ships that had disappeared.
Their first stop winds up being a currently unnamed planet, whereupon landing, they realize that not only is it really cold, but that there is also civilization, equivalent to roughly 12th Century Earth. They inspect the town closest to their landing site, known to the locals as Triom. Because of their arrival on a 'celestial ship', they are treated as gods, and immediately shown to the down elder, Ghimdo. While speaking to him, a young girl comes in and draws on the floor, the patterns immediately recognized by Faize as symbols used for Symbology. They learn that the populace of the planet is plagued by a disease known as Bacculus, which slowly turns anyone affected into stone. Ghimdo explains that he himself is suffering from the disease, his legs almost entirely turned into stone.
He then introduces the girl as his granddaughter, Lymle. Otherwise known as 'Faize's Worst Nightmare'. He immediately scoffs at the fact that such a [seemingly] young girl is able to use Symbology, only to be attacked by her. She warms up to everyone except for him immediately, giving them nicknames, but calling Faize... Faize, despite his initial efforts to make amends. And no, it doesn't get much better. They eventually embark on a mission to cure the disease asking only that the villagers stop treating them as gods in return, leading them all over the planet, destroying another mysterious meteorite fragment brought to the planet by the lizard-like race known as the Cardianon. Doing so does kill the disease, but at the cost of everyone affected by it.
Lymle, having nobody to return home to, joins them on their journey. Naturally, Faize is unnerved by this decision, but he goes with Edge's intuition. On the ship, she informs them that the planet was named after her middle name "Lemuri", and is thusly called "Lemuris".
As they fly away from Lemuris, the party sets a course for the Cardianon home planet to learn more about these meteorites and why they are Messing Things Up, only to be ensnared by the Cardianon mothership instead. On board they meet Bacchus, a cyborg that has been studying and fighting the Grigori, aka the meteorite fragments that they've been picking up and destroying willy-nilly. He explains that the Grigori are responsible for the sudden evolution and irrational behavior of the Cardianon, amongst other things. They destroy the Grigori that inhabits the ship, and escape just in time before it disappears, warping away.
Then they get sucked into a wormhole, go back in time, and Edge winds up accidentally destroying an alternate Earth. WHOOPS.
Before this happens, Faize, for the first time, shows signs of active insubordination. Not that he's trying to usurp Edge as leader, but as his friend, and someone who cares deeply for Edge, he tries to talk him out causing the end of the world by providing 23rd century technology to 1950s Earthlings trying to build a weapon. In Edge's defense, they did a great job in making it seem like it was only for peaceful purpose. But yeah. EDGE ISN'T TOO BRIGHT AT TIMES. They barely escape with their lives, thrown back into their present date by the force of the planet exploding.
Oh yeah, they managed to pick up a catgirl named Meracle, too.
Upon Edge's inevitable mental breakdown, Reimi takes charge, deeming him temporarily unfit to lead. She leads them to the planet Roak, where the party immediately winds up coming to the aid of the residentditz Angel-Girl Sarah by... Edge scaring away the men holding her captive like a complete maniac. He promptly emos up and, upon being offered a guide to the Purgatorium, states that he doesn't want to meddle in the affairs of underdeveloped civilizations anymore. Especially when Sarah informs them that apparently their coming had been preordained by murals in said Purgatorium. They leave Sarah to her own devices, and continue on their way.
They then come across the nomadic Black Tribe, and this also marks the beginning of Faize's ultimate turning point.
Fascinated by the symbology used by a young woman of the Black Tribe, which makes use of transference rather than warping to call upon a Bunny, Faize warms up to her considerably, interrogating her over and over on the mechanics behind it, especially since Eldarian technology hadn't even reached that point. Unfortunately, she wasn't allowed to teach him the actual skill, but invited Faize to join the tribe. Of course, he couldn't go ahead and do it, but before Faize departed, she gave him the tools to catch a Bunny, necessary to visit the Purgatorium, and his own, personal gift: a black cloak. Honored, he dons it. ...But of course this also leads to incessant teasing by the somewhat jealous Lymle.
Reimi suddenly collapses, revealing that she too had been affected by some sort of stone sickness-- which is also running rampant on this planet. Sound like a pattern? The only difference here is that Roak has managed to find a cure for it. Sarah brings them the antidote, but in a wonderful plot point, it's stolen by a thief who runs into a Colosseum, where if a convicted felon wins ten battles, they are set free. When Edge refuses to fight out of fear that they would further meddle in a planet's affairs, Faize steps up to the challenge, to Edge's dismay. Faize then manages to turn the tables with help from Sarah, pushing Edge into recovering the medicine himself.
Naturally, Sarah goes missing the next day, taken away by a cult to be sacrificed at the Purgatorium to bring about the End Of The World.
Because of all the help she'd given them thus far, the group resolves to go and save her from such a cruel fate. Along the way, Faize stops at the Black Tribe's tents to meet with the woman again, only to discover that the tend was completely empty... despite the fact that there were signs of very recent activity. He uneasily shrugs it off, the mission at hand taking priority.
Meracle winds up leading them to her childhood hero Eleyna in Tropp, another city on Roak, who happens to be a fortune teller and a friend of Sarah's as well. She eventually revealed to them that Sarah's execution would in fact lead to the end of the world. She then collapses. In a spectacular show in just how powerful Faize's logical side can be, he tries to take charge again and lead the group forward, despite the fact that Eleyna had fainted. Edge forces them to pull back, which causes Faize to argue with him, finally showing his true feelings.
Faize and Edge have always had a little brother/big brother relationship and upon seeing someone that he whole heartedly looked up to and admired just... completely fall apart, Faize couldn't take it anymore. Fed up with Edge's emo, Faize indirectly challenges him for leadership of the group. For a split second, the old Edge returns and, with resolve, he promises Faize that he'll soon return to his old self, and, trusting him, Faize backs down.
They eventually make it to the Purgatorium, defeating the cultists and their leader and saving Sarah. However, as the crew is busy celebrating, Faize wanders away and discovers his greatest fear: the remnants of the Black Tribe, sacrificed earlier that day. The sight is the final turning point, and he goes completely mad. His eyes glow red and he begins laughing maniacally, just so overwhelmed by grief that not even his genetic modification can quell it. Eventually, he calms down-- at least on the surface, telling his friends that everything is okay. Obviously, it's not.
And before this app gets any longer, we'll fast forward to the final kick to Faize's gut and the moment from which I'll be taking him.
The party is called back to Aeos where there's been an attack by the Phantom Ships [lmao Grigori] on the Eldarian/Earthling exploration base. There are no survivors, and everything is completely destroyed. The crew is then ambushed by a group of these Phantoms, and suddenly saved by none other than Edge and Reimi's childhood friend Crowe, along with his very own Eldarian side-kick named Arumat. They debrief the crew on the situation.
The Phantoms had provoked the Eldar System's sun into expanding, speeding up the doomsday clock by more than a century-- this lead to the entire planet of Eldar being engulfed, as seen by Arumat's own eyes. Although many civilians managed to escape on refugee ships, the Phantoms had anticipated this and shot many of them down. Now the Eldarian numbers are few and far between. It doesn't help that Crowe suddenly gets a message, where they find out that the Phantoms have returned for another attack, killing more innocent civilians.
Faize is so shattered by the news, that he collapses to the floor, visibly shaken. Arumat, as a fellow Eldarian, manages to get him back on his feet, offering comforting words (...at least for Arumat orz) and some sort of morale. Faize's mind was then made up-- he would return to space and fight alongside the SRF and Eldarian Fleet to save his brethren.
Before leaving though, he's stopped by Lymle, who apparently doesn't want him to go. He makes a deal with her-- if she'll admit that the cloak doesn't look ugly on him, then he'll stay by her side. Lymle, being the stubborn (yet still lovable ;;) girl s he is, refuses, telling him that it looks dumb. Probably her way of letting Faize go, and he leaves with Crowe.
However, he won't make it to space-- instead, he finds himself in a very strange, strange new room...
